Local Guide is basically a community where anyone can contribute to the Google Maps by leaving ratings, feedbacks and pictures that can help other people find and understand places. The idea behind this is to make Google Maps more trusted so that users can better connect with the application and get insights of locations before actually visiting.

Whenever you reach the desired location it asks you to leave your ratings, pictures, etc. The more you leave ratings the more you level up.

Local Guide Features

When you leave ratings and feedback you become a local guide. You may check your local guide contributions in Menu > My Contributions. Here you can see all of your reviews, contributions, and rewards.

When you become a local guide, Google rewards you with many benefits like early access to its latest services. You may also get free or discounted Google Play Music subscriptions, rented movies and many more.

At reaching a certain level you may even receive special gifts and a Google Guide Exclusive Badge from Google.

What You Can Contribute

You can contribute the following things and when you do so you receive points. These points help you level up.

  • Reviews: 10 points
  • Photos: 5 points
  • Videos: 7 points
  • Answers: 1 point
  • Q&A answers: 3 points
  • Edits: 5 points
